October 5, 2003: Day Three

Today was our final day in Avalon. We had originally planned to stay on the Island until Monday, but earlier we decided we really weren't in the mood for the half-day snorkling adventure we'd planned for yesterday, and since we'd done pretty much all we really wanted to do this time around, we decided to head back to the mainland after our Day of Beauty. We rose fairly early, had some yummy waffles at Sally's Waffle place, then took our suitcases to the boat dock to store in a couple of lockers before heading to our Day of Beauty.

The Day of Beauty was wonderful! We each got pedicures, facials, and a scalp treatment. We'd both gotten manicures last Thursday after I arrived in Costa Mesa (and I decided to go with a full set of acrylics since, hey! I'm on vacation!), so we only needed to have our toes done. The girl who did our pedis was a lovely little girl from Austrailia. She'd had to bring her little baby daughter, who more than made up for the loud, obnoxious monsters Jewel and I had to endure on the boat trip over here. I swear I got a little twinge of longing in my uterus. But that's another story. The only thing that was a bit disappointing about the pedicure, for me, anyway, was that they didn't have the massaging spa chairs I've gotten so used to. They did have one of those bubbling massaging foot bath thingies, which was quite nice, but it's just not the same! I had the mango massage scrub pedicure, and the little Aussie pedicurist did an awesome job! My legs have never been so soft! I chose a great OPI colour called Day at the Peach, because it sounded like "day at the beach" which I thought was quite appropriate for this weekend. It looks really good, too!

I have never had a facial or a scalp treatment before. I don't know why. It's a truly wonderful experience! After my pedicure, I was lead into a dimly lit room filled with soothing music and calming fragrance. I got up on a massage table, and closed my eyes as warm steam misted on my skin, and the woman's expert hands massaged my face, neck and shoulders, and applied and removed several skin-care products. She only had to extract a couple deep white heads from my nose (which surprised me, as I thought I had tons of pimply things on my nose), and told me I had generally nice skin. I've always thought it was pretty cruddy skin myslf, but I guess we are always our own worst critics! After the facial, I got a scalp treatment and massage, which was heavenly! I was so relaxed and calm from the experience, I didn't want to leave! My skin has never looked better. I might have to add the occasional facial into my new beauty regieme.

After our Day of Beauty, Jewel and I had time for one last quick cup of coffee before heading over to the dock to catch our boat. We recovered our suitcases from the lockers, and took our place in line. This boat was not as crowded as the one going over, and Jewel and I were able to have a nice booth all to ourselves. There were some children aboard this boat, too, but they had responsible adult supervision throughout the journey, and were adorable and delightful.

I will definitely be going back to Catalina Island! Next time, I'm bringing my mom. I know she'd love to see the Botanical Gardens, and the Museum, and I know she'd fall in love with the Island just as much as I have. I think an Eco Tour might be fun, too, and perhaps a short hike. So much to do, and so little time! Thank God, Catalina Island is so close to home!
