As the Garden Fades

This week the garden looks sadder than ever. I’m not sure if the heat has finally taken its toll on the plants, or if they’re just getting old. It is almost September after all, so maybe it’s just about time for the garden to take its last gasp.

We have about five or six nice-looking honeydew melons. I think they might be ready for harvest soon.

The zucchini plants still look sad. We’re getting lots of nice, big blossoms, but very few squash.

Sometime over the past week, the cucumber plants began dying. There were nearly seven little green cucs starting to grow, but now they’re all yellow and the plants are droopy. It’s terribly sad because even though we’re kinda getting tired of cucumbers, just this past week I asked Miz Bix over at Elastic Waist to hunt down some cucumber recipies for me, and she agreed to do so. Now I’m afraid that by the time I have some delictible cucumber dishes to make, I won’t have any cucumbers!

Luckily we’re still getting some beautiful deep green bell peppers from our pepper plants! One of the poor plants, however, is so tall and the peppers so heavy, it’s fallen over, and we’re having to rest it on an overturned bucket.

The tomatoes are ripening faster than we can eat them – but they’re so delicious!! Sweet and juicy and the perfect BLT size!

In other gardening news, the lavender is nearly finished blooming, so I didn’t bother photographing it this week, but the rosemary has a few pretty purple blossoms on it.

And, finally, a new use for an old crock pot:

And in case you’re wondering, yes that is a fake fern in the crock pot. Cheers!
